Practice builds confidence!
Simone Biles is a 20 year old American gymnast. She was the 2016 Olympic individual all-around, vault and floor gold medalist. Here’s what she had to say about practice:
“Practice creates confidence. Confidence empowers you.”
The decision to joinwas one of my best! The goal of Toastmasters is to help members improve their communication, public speaking, and leadership skills.
Each week, you stand up before your Toastmasters club and either give a prepared speech or tell a joke. You may also get called on to tell quick, off the cuff stories in front of the group on topics selected by the leader of that day’s meeting.
To add a little pressure, the members vote on the best speaker and someone keeps track of the length of your speech. Each speech has a required time and if you run below or above, you get penalized. The members will also cast ballots and provide comments so you can learn from every speech.
The members of your club are very supportive and encouraging. However, the first few speeches are still nerve wracking!
You will learn so much about how to engage your audience. How to use body language, eye contact and storytelling to captivate their hearts and minds. But you’ll do it with folks who are compassionate and understanding.
It’s the safest place to transform into a confident speaker and overcome stage fright!
